“You’re back?” asked Jacky, a kindergartener with a surprised smile on his face. It had been two months since my last visit to the Visitacion Valley Elementary Good News Club©. After being away for Children’s Ministries Institute™, I returned to Visitacion Valley Elementary for the last club of the school year. Taken aback by his emotive reaction, I replied “Of course, I had to come see you all!” Even more surprised, Jacky responded “You had to come see us?” with excitement and joy. After all this time away, my presence made an impact on Jacky’s little life. I wondered how else my service in this club may have influenced the children. As I observed the club, I was amazed to see how much of the scripture and the teachings these children had retained. The vast majority coming from non-believing households – and many of them first-generation Americans – I marveled at the impact that these weeks of studying and showing up could have on the rest of their lives. By the end of this school year, all but one of the 22 students had professed faith in Christ – a most amazing impact. But even just the reality that the kids now had a basic grounding in the scriptures and the reality of God’s powerful love for them was just stunning to me. Proverbs 22:6 tells us to “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” I was struck that regardless of where these children stand in relationship to God, they now know who Jesus is and the way he made for them to come to God. What an invaluable gift was given by the volunteers who served. As we look towards the fall, would you consider asking God how He might want you to support Good News Clubs this year? Precious children like Jacky are waiting to hear the good news that Jesus died to save sinners. Your every effort, prayer, and gift towards this work is invaluable. Ysabel Woody—field missionary |
