Max receives Jesus at Good News Club last month
One of the cardinal rules of counseling a group of children to receive Christ is to discern which children are actually there to learn more about receiving Christ, and which ones came back just for some other reason. The rule is to first deal with the ones who want to receive Christ, and then move on to the other kids and their questions and concerns.
At a school club last month, four children responded to the invitation to receive Christ after my Bible lesson. I began by asking each of them why they wanted to come back to talk to me, and after getting their response, began to counsel them accordingly. The two girls in the group were quieter and seemed more tuned in to what was going on, while the two boys appeared to be more interested in getting a change of scenery than learning how to receive Christ as their Savior. In fact, their body language
was beginning to be a disruption for the two girls, and I didn’t want to let the girls miss out on receiving Christ. As I struggled to contain the situation, Nadya came into the right side of my field of vision. I quickly got her attention and promptly had her escort the two boys to the other side of the room to take care of counseling them. Shortly after I did, one of the two returned to the larger classroom, while the other boy, Max, remained seated.
I began counseling the two girls, but it became apparent that they were not ready, so I gave them a tract and sent them back to class. Once they had taken a seat, I glanced Nadya’s way and saw Max with his head bowed. I had sent him to Nadya to “deal with”, and she ended up leading him to do business with Jesus. God is so good, and so sovereign, that He took my lack of discernment and still accomplished what He wanted to do in Max’s life.
